Maple Leafs Trade for Dion Phaneuf

The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly acquired Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf for forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan and defenceman Ian White. Other players involved are Flames winger Frederik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie and Jamal Mayers from the Leafs. The Leafs also acquired Ducks goalie JS Giguere in exchange for G Vesa Toskala.

Hugo thanks for the salary breakdown that was a great idea to see the in/out ledger! As for Dion...there are many examples in sport where a disgruntled (or even an employee for that matter) player moves on...and lives up to his potential. I am neither a fan nor foe when it comes to Dion...he has a huge upside...and there is no way that Wilson will allow any bull$hit to take place in the locker room. The scrutiny of media and fans will motivate him..or else he will be on the train heading outta Big Smoke. Now if we can only get Bob Gainey motivated..or broom him outta Le Belle Province...Can we get a least one forward over 5'9"???

Maple Leaf fans will soon discover their new defenceman is a $6,500,000 talent run by a 5 cent brain. Phaneuf will either learn to control his multi-million dollar ego in the Leaf's dressing room or he'll poison that room the same way he did in Calgary. Good riddance to a Flames problem and good luck to Maple Leaf fans who think they now have an all-star defenceman. They've inherited a defensive liability who exhibits great moments of flash and dash, shoots too often on the power play and who frequently has to get bailed out by his partner in his own.

Opps made a typo? Should read $14.93M OUT and $14.49 IN for Leafs. They save $440,000 in the transactions. Already at the cap, Burke is in trouble.

Salary and terms of deals. To Calgary: Hagman: $3 million (Two more years on his deal) Stajan: $1.75 million (UFA in the summer) Mayers: $1, 333, 333 (UFA in the summer) White: $850,000 (RFA in the summer) To Anaheim: Blake: $4 million (Two more years on his deal) Toskala: $4 million (UFA in the summer). To Toronto: Giguere: $6 million (One more year on his deal) Phaneuf: $6.98 million (Four more years on his deal) Sjostrom: $750,000 (One more year on his deal) Aulie: $733,333 (Entry-level deal) $14.49M OUT and $14.49 IN for Leafs. I think they lose because of Dion's huge salary over the next 4 years.

Phaneuf seems to be a headcase, so will be very interesting the relationship he will have with Wilson. Could be mixing oil and water. Also if Phaneuf thinks the media was *** him in Calgary, if he under performs here as he has recently in CowTown, the fans and media will be all over him by the end of the year. Time will tell what happens, but looks like Burke going to have some cap issues come training camp time, unless he can do some magic over the summer. I will not hold my breathe on that one.

I don't like this one bit. Phaneuf is just a cancer in the locker room. Giving up that much for him is a mistake. Can't say anything bad about getting Giguere though. I just hope he isn't washed up.

These trades will only benefit the Leafers. I wanted to see Giguere go to the Habs....but Burke ever the chameleon does it again. Perhaps Mr. Gainey could learn a thing or two. Dion has grossly underachieved in the Flames camp...and with Ron Wilson as his coach and a new city...watch out...he could be a monster. But really...why couldn't the Habs have made this deal...?????????
