Why 2010 Could Have Been, “The Year of the Tiger”

On February 14, 2010 the Chinese people welcome the "Year of the Tiger". And in the Year of the Tiger, one Tiger Woods might not be playing golf on the PGA Tour. "I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf", as he said on his website.

Well all I've got to say is, 2010 just could have been the Year of the Tiger….Tiger Woods. Tiger needs four more major victories to tie Jack Nicklaus for the most majors won at 18, Tiger currently has 14 victories. Jack was 46 years old when he won his 18th major. Tiger's 14th victory came in the 2008 US Open at age 32. On December 30th, Tiger turns 34 years old and the possibility of 4 Majors victories in 2010 just might have happened to tie Jack for the lead and accomplish this feat 12 years younger than Jack. And here's why…

April 8-11, the Masters at Augusta Georgia

He hasn't won the Masters since 2005 when he and Chris DiMarco played in a playoff to decide the winner. Tiger sunk a 15 foot birdie putt to win the first playoff hole and his fourth green jacket. Could 2010 been the year of a fifth green jacket, we'll probably never know.

June 17-20, The U.S. Open, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach California

This is one of Tiger's favorite golf courses. In 2000, he won the US Open by 15 shots, posting the only score under par at -12, his nearest competition was Ernie Els and Migual Jimenez at +3, the largest margin of victory in major championship history. He recorded only 6 holes over par of the 72 played and 17 holes under par. Seventy three percent of his balls were in the fairway and almost 71% of the greens were in regulation, quite simply an amazing performance. Oh I forgot to mention one other tidbit, back in February of 2000, he won the AT&T on Pebble Beach Golf course with a score of -15, he had some competition in this tournament however, Matt Gogel and Vijay Singh were at -13 and three others were at -12. Tiger shot a final round 64 to cap the victory.

July 15-18, The Open Championship, St. Andrews Links, the Old Course in Fife, Scotland

This is another one of Tiger's favorite golf courses. He's played The Open at this course three times, the first in 1995 at the age of 19, missed the cut with a score of +7 finishing in 68th place. In 2000, he won by 8 strokes over Thomas Bjorn to finish with a score of -19. In 2005 again at St.Andrews, he won again leading from start to finish, defeating Colin Montgomerie by 5 strokes scoring -14. In 2010, The Open Championship goes to St. Andrews and Tiger would have been the odds on favorite to win and his record proves it.

August 12-15, The PGA Championship, Whistling Straits, Kohler Wisconsin

Of the four majors in 2010, this is the only one that could have been questioned. In 2004, at Whistling Straits, Tiger finished tied for 24th with a score of +1 or 286. The winner that year was Vijay Singh who tied Chris DiMarco and won in a playoff, both with a score of 280. Tiger only 6 shots off the lead, could have made that up if only it were not for the 11 shots over par on 11 hole in the first and fourth rounds.

Now I'm not saying Tiger would win all four majors in 2010, but if he had a shot to win them all in one calendar year, 2010 would have been the year he could have easily done it. Last year was a great year for Tiger, placing first in earnings at $10.5M, winning 6 tournaments, scoring 68.83 on average for the year, his best since 2000 when he scored 68.17, but he will be most remembered for the missed cut at the Open Championship in July. Despite that mishap, he had a very good year.

Below on the chart check out all the tournaments Tiger might participate in 2010.

Tiger, since the year 2000, at these tournaments, won almost one third of time, that is really unheard of in sports. Perhaps his friend Roger Federer is about the only man who comes close to that.

Could Tiger be missing an opportunity to be back and better then even, potentially winning all 4 majors this year?? Well, we may never know or perhaps Tiger lifts his "indefinite break".

This is a good blog...but can we compare different players or different teams during different eras?

Hopefully Tiger returns in time for Masters, because if he does he has a realistic shot at all 4 majors considering where the venues are this year. Who cares that he slept with 1 women or 100 women, is it really anybody's business but his own? I love Tiger because he is the most creative human to ever strike a golf ball, not because he ended up with a 50 year marriage.
