No More.

With in the last couple weeks Tiger Woods name has surfaced. Arguably one of the greatest golfers ever, winning 71 PGA tour events as well as 14 Majors, to date. His name has come up, however, because of his alleged affairs, some say with as many as eleven women. Every day there is something new to this saga. I don't think there has been ever a time when both sports fans and entertainment junkies have embraced a story, together, like this before. Which raises the question, should sports networks follow the story like they have been.

Sports are an escape for many from the hustle-and-bustle of their daily lives, a means for gathering with a bunch of friends, and a hobby to others. The coverage on ESPN and TSN of this story is over the top. When these networks, and it not just these two specific ones, talk about this story they for a few minutes become like those entertainment shows. I watch sports to get away from all the scandals, family and financial issues that happen so often in our world. To have it enter on these networks is the last thing I want to see. The only thing that should be on the 10pm SportsCentre is highlights and analysts of the games that evening. Whatever the athlete chooses to do afterwards for enjoyment, is their prerogative. One exemption is if the event directly affects the out come of the athlete. Example: Wood's car accident, or a player taking performance-enhancing drugs.

ESPN, TSN and others, please just focus on sports and sports only. Do what you guys do best. The past few days have all been about Tiger and the stories that should be covered more in depth have not. Stories on how the Yankees are building their team to repeat a championship. That is another blog.

Actually SloMo, there was more than enough rumours about ALL the Kennedy boys and their extra women during the 60's and 70's. It was no secret at the time either. And as I also pointed out in another blog here, the entertainment-style (as in ET) has been infused into sports journalism for years now, with the eye-candy sports hostesses, reporters, and sideline interviewers. My god, Sportsnet and Sportsdesk looked like ET at times in the past(especially Dairu Dhillon who looked and acted like she walked onto the wrong set). It wasnt the sports scribes who ratted\outed Tiger, it was the entertainment scribes. Most sports outlets were still reporting the "accident" until Tigers blog came out. The real question is why didnt even 1 golf\sports hack do him in before this if they knew? Why wait till he was outed elsewhere? Why? Because it hasnt changed much at all.

Ok here is the thing..and I alluded to it in another blog on this site....We know about Jack Kennedy's trysts long after the fact. Shannon talked on PTS about whether or not we as fans, people, society etc should know about the private lives of athletes....He was not sure....I would like to weigh in here...and it was also touched on PTS... image...which in turn is also about branding..and its also about business. Tiger Woods is a business and a brand..he is also an image that is being carefully projected to us. Does it matter if Nike has deplorable working conditions? Does it alter our perception about buying said shoes? YES! If I followed a player as a kid..all my life and later was to find out he was a wife abuser, drank and hit his kids..that kinda changes his image. Tiger Woods image was being sold and we bought it......In the court of public opinion..yes we should know...if things become public domain.....then I think someone should stand up....
