I know it's a little late, but if you are still looking for a couple of last minute gifts for your sports-loving pals, you could do worse than a classic movie. To help, I've put together a list of some of my favorite sports movies all of which I have in my own library of DVD's) and each one is a "must see!".
1. ROUNDERS: If you are a poker player you not only have already seen this movie, you have memorized it. Best opening line in Hollywood film making history. Great movie even if you don't play the game, but I suggest you watch it with someone who does.
2. SEABISCUIT: A beautifully crafted film with the most realistic racing scenes ever produced. A wonderful story…I've watched this one 4 or 5 times.
3. THE HUSTLER: Maybe you have to be old enough to remember when going to the "Ball Hall" was a regular night out, but this is still a stunningly honest film. Of course, if you like "The Hustler" you'll have to watch the sequel, "The Color of Money." (It's better than most people give it credit for.)
4. BULL DURHAM: Not many sports movies you can watch with your wife or girlfriend, but this one qualifies. Hard to believe this one received no Oscar nominations.
5. HOOSIERS: Must see! The depiction of life in the 1950's is so real, you might think it was filmed then. (Actually, 1985)
6. ROCKY: As great as it is, I think I've reached the point where I've watched it one too many times. Still, no serious sports movie library can be complete without it. (If only the fight scenes were more realistic, it would be the "perfect" movie.)
7. THE NATURAL: One of the best films ever made, regardless of genre. It's so good that even the fantasy stuff (like Hobbs knocking the cover off the ball) is okay.
8. FIELD OF DREAMS: I'll watch this movie at least once a year, just so I can hear James Earl Jones say the word "base-ball." This might be the best sports movie of all time.
9. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Best football movie ever made. Name another sports film with action scenes as realistic as this?
10. THE ROOKIE: Dennis Quaid has done his share of sports movies, but this one is the best of the bunch. Another true story.
Others I recommend:
MIRACLE
JERRY MAGUIRE
HEAVEN CAN WAIT
RUDY
61*
TIN CUP
ANY GIVEN SUNDAY
THE CINCINNATI KID
BLUE CHIPS
SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER
THE PROGRAM
BRIAN'S SONG
By no means is this intended to be a complete list. But if, by chance, there is a movie above that you haven't seen, run out right now and buy it for yourself and forget the gift idea altogether.
Hey, got a movie you think should have been on my list? Let's hear from you.

i forget what the criteria was that they based they're selections on, but i havent seen anybody mention finding forrester. not sure if it would be considered a sports movie or not, though it is a dominant theme throughoutRivelli wrote on Jan 10, 2010
Worst sports movie ever - Faceoff, starring Art Hindle and Trudy Young (remember her from Razzle Dazzle with Howard the Turtle and Al Hamel?), and featuring George Armstrong. 2nd worst - Youngblood, starring Rob LoweRivelli wrote on Jan 10, 2010
Best ever - Field of Dreams, hands down. Shoeless Joe: Is this heaven? Ray Kinsella: No, it's Iowa. And Burt Lancaster as Old Doc Graham was perfect.Rivelli wrote on Jan 10, 2010
Brian's Song, about the relationship between Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo was a TV movie, but pretty darn good. And who can forget The King of Hockey, with John Wayne?Scooby wrote on Jan 7, 2010
And another under-rated movie would be "American Flyers" starring Kevin Costner. Excellent movie.Scooby wrote on Jan 7, 2010
I would have to add "Gridiron Gang" to the list. Loved the film and the do***entary. Also "We Are Marshall".Stoney wrote on Jan 6, 2010
I just saw The Blind Side on the weekend. What a great story, even if it is jazzed up a bit by Hollywood. Should be on the list somewhere.the Lion wrote on Jan 6, 2010
Sorry but the previous comment has a bad error in it. I meant to say the movie that I haven't seen listed but is really good is Phar Lap.the Lion wrote on Jan 6, 2010
There is a lot of great movies mentioned and I have watched most of them. A movie that I haven't seen and I found to be really good, in fact, I would put it above Seabiscuit. I believe the movie is from Australia so not of the actors are know. It is a horse racing movie and is called Phar Lap.Frankie T wrote on Jan 5, 2010
A great movie, not only for Habs fans was The Rocket about Rocket Richard. A good period piece and great hockey action.Phil Nelles wrote on Jan 5, 2010
Grand Prix. Finest movie ever about motorsport.arbster wrote on Jan 5, 2010
Great list. Major league 3 is actually a great sports movie. Real solid in regards to the development of young players without actually taking itself too seriously.Aaron wrote on Jan 5, 2010
Bob, great list. I gotta go with Field of Dreams as the best sports movie ever made. "Dad wanna have a catch" gets me ever time. But where is Happy Gilmore!!james cartwright wrote on Jan 4, 2010
Lady bugs and a league of there own were also classics, please dont leave them outvcjay wrote on Jan 4, 2010
I'd like to add "The Rocket" and "Slap Shot" to the list. "Ali" wasn't too bad either.DJS Harris wrote on Jan 3, 2010
A small indie movie that came out this year called 'Sugar' is a must-see. It's a fictional story of a Dominican prospect that is recruited into the majors. Definitely check it out. And of course Hoop Dreams, Ali, Raging Bull and He got game!Shelby wrote on Jan 3, 2010
The Rookie. Such a low budget, poorly produced, badly scripted film... It makes me cry every time I watch it. A true story and a truly great sports movie. Sports are great because they were the original reality TV. This hokey movie actually happened and it's worth watching multiple times.Gene Siskel's Ghost wrote on Dec 31, 2009
I would add "Caddyshack", "Bad News Bears", "Hoop Dreams", "When We Were Kings", "Raging Bull" and an independent film that was released in 2009 starring Patton Oswalt called "Big Fan".Barbee wrote on Dec 29, 2009
Well... lets not forget these gems: - The Program - The Replacements - Necessary Roughness - Longest Yard (remake) - Rollerball (orig & remake) - Johnny B Good - Mystery Alaska - Major League (II & III) - Varsity Blues - And.... OVER THE TOP!!!!! Whats really sad is that I've seen every one of these movies...Howard wrote on Dec 28, 2009
Bob you mentioned the film "Rudy". Now I'm not one that sheds too many tears when I watch movies, but every time I catch this one on television I can't see the screen when Rudy is hoisted up on the shoulders of his team mates due to my eyes getting all watery. For those of you who have never seen this flic, rent it - not just once, three or four times. Each time, it gets better and better. And if you have kids who need some educational inspiration, then plunk them down in front of the tv and they might just understand what determination is all about.kq76 wrote on Dec 28, 2009
My favourite sports movie is probably Bull Durham, but 2 other baseball favourites are: Eight Men Out about Shoeless Joe and the rest of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox; and Pride of the Yankees starring Gary Cooper as the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. Thanks for the list, Bob.mike.s wrote on Dec 28, 2009
Honourable mention goes to: The Longest Yard, Bad News Bears, Cool Runnings, Eight Men Out, The Cinderella Man and Gladiator...technically it could be considered a sports movie!Wayne wrote on Dec 28, 2009
Good list. I would like to add "We Are Marshall" and the "Legend of Bagger Vance" and one more golf movie "The Greatest Game Ever Played". I have a list of over 400 sports movies at Best-Sports-Movies dot com, where you can find more excellent movies to add to this list.Sky wrote on Dec 26, 2009
Remember the Titans...great movie.Chris wrote on Dec 26, 2009
Can someone make a decent movie about hockey already? We have Slapshot (a comedy), we have The Mighty Ducks (a children's movie), and we have a movie about the Miracle On Ice USA hockey team. (Finally.) Where is hockey's version of Field Of Dreams? There has never been a serious, compelling movie made about hockey that has any sort of mass appeal. I think we've run the gamut of baseball and football movies already.Steve wrote on Dec 25, 2009
A fantastic holiday blog and an excellent list Bobcat! A couple of movies that should be on your list and anyones for that matter are (in no particular order) The Pride of the Yankees, Breaking Away, Chariots of Fire, Friday Night Lights, White Men Can't Jump, The Bad News Bears and Million Dollar Baby. Let's throw in some CANCON and The Rocket certainly makes the grade. And if do***entaries are being considered you certainly can't go wrong with Hoop Dreams and When We Were Kings. Season Greetings!Chris wrote on Dec 24, 2009
MAJOR LEAGUE!!! :)sudsyp wrote on Dec 24, 2009
One to explore that blends sports and literature and the deeps of the human condition is Finding Forrester. Excellent story, acting and discovering the love of both art forms. I thought of this movie when I listened to Bobcats relating his thoughts about Chris Bosh.Buddywon wrote on Dec 24, 2009
It's stunning to me that no one has mentioned, "Raging Bull". Difficult to watch, but one of the best.YukonSloMo wrote on Dec 24, 2009
Brian's Song at the bottom...?Linden16 wrote on Dec 24, 2009
From what I hear, Blindside should be on the list, especially since it's based on a true story. My favourites - Slapshot, Rocky, Rudy, Remember The Titans, Bull Durham, The Longest Yard and Tin Cup. Great list, Bobcat, and here's wishing a very safe and happy holiday season to the Fadoo gang!jtullock wrote on Dec 24, 2009
Field Of Dreams hands down, the best sports movie ever!Luke Trashtalker wrote on Dec 24, 2009
What about Happy Gilmore and Youngblood, not cinematic masterpieces but classics nontheless. In all seriousness When We Were Kings should be on the list.Kevin Rupert wrote on Dec 23, 2009
I don't usually (Actually Never) post to a blog or respond online to any kind of comments, but since this subject is near and dear to my heart, one of the movies I would include on my list is the original, Walter Matthau version of the Bad News Bears. I would also include Slapshot and Tin Cup or Caddysahck (just to have a golf movie in there)cyberwanderer wrote on Dec 23, 2009
I can't help but notice, for a self-described, hard-boiled cynic, there sure are a lot of sentimental and whimsical films on the Bobcat's Top Ten List. (Seabiscuit, Field of Dreams, Hoosiers, etc.) I think it's a great list. Every listed movie I've seen, I've enjoyed immensely. One movie -- a TV Movie of the Week -- that I saw as a kid is not listed. It's over-the-top smoltz in its execution, but since it's based on a true and touching story, it became a true tearjerker. The movie is Something For Joey. And though it was a four-hour miniseries and not a movie, the CBC's Summit Series 72 which aired a few years back was brilliant. I can watch it over and over and keep marvelling at the writing and the great performances.Gary Merke wrote on Dec 23, 2009
A couple of my favourite that are not on Bob's list are 8 Men Out and Remember the Titans. I also loved The Natural and Rudy which did make bob's list.dougal wrote on Dec 23, 2009
I would have to put this one though i am not sure the availability i saw it on english TV first but i had to import my DVD The Club(1980)aka David Williamson's The Club (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080546/) it is a cracking film about boardroom and on field intrigues at a top flight Aussie Rules Football Club ,directed by Bruce Beresford who also Directed Breaker Morant. If you ever get a chance i can recommend it wholeheartedly . I have to put Slapshot on my list too and Bull Durham and whilst it isnt on my top list by far i do like Bob Uecker in Major leagueRick Morayniss wrote on Dec 23, 2009
Interesting list. I would not have the Hustler or rounders on mine (when did pool or poker become a sport?). I would certainly include Slapshot and Face-off on my list.
