Bruins Shopping Thomas?

The Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch reported Sunday two sources claimed Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli was in talks with teams seeking goaltending help, leading Garrioch to suggest the Bruins might be on the verge of trading Tim Thomas.

SPECTOR'S TAKE: The Bruins are in the midst of a horrific slide due in part to injuries to several key players and Chiarelli is believed shopping around for offensive help but it seems far-fetched to suggest he's trying to move Thomas.

Granted, Thomas, the 2009 Vezina winner, has struggled this season but he's in the first years of a four-year contract paying him a cap hit of $5 million per season plus he has a "no-trade" clause, two factors making him very difficult to move at this point in the season.

If Chiarelli were to shop a goalie it might be backup Tuukka Rask but I doubt he'd be willing to do that right now. The Bruins have nine selections in the first two rounds of this year's draft, including two first round picks. Other than the first rounder they landed from the Toronto Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel I believe Chiarelli is shopping various combinations of picks and prospects for offensive depth.

Thomas hasn't been spectacular, but, when you're the lowest scoring team in the league and go through a 10 game losing streak but are still in playoff contention ~ goaltending is the least of your worries, burying the biscuit in the basket should be in the for front.

Minor correction: Shouldn't it be nine picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts? Think it's five this year and four next year.
