The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday Blues president John Davidson admitted his team held talks with the Atlanta Thrashers over Ilya Kovalchuk for nearly a week prior to the Thrashers shipping the superstar winger to the New Jersey Devils on February 4th.
Davidson said his club ultimately backed out of the bidding when the Thrashers requested a couple of pieces the Blues were unwilling to part with for a rental player.
He declined to comment on the possibility of bidding for Kovalchuk in this summer's unrestricted free agent market.
SPECTOR'S TAKE: The Blue currently have over $28 million committed to 11 players for next season, and they're not expected to re-sign forwards Paul Kariya and Keith Tkachuk. If they're still willing to spend over $50 million on payroll again for next season it's possible the Blues could get into the bidding for Kovalchuk should he test this summer's market.
