Flyers Interested in Kovalchuk?

In recent days there's been conflicting reports out of Philadelphia regarding the Flyers level of interest in Atlanta Trashers superstar Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Philadelphia Daily News, citing multiple league and team sources, reported late last week the Flyers have no interest in Kovalchuk, but on February 1st CSNPhilly.com reported a source claiming Flyers GM Paul Holmgren had had intermittent talks with the Thrashers and might be willing to at least listen to what that club might want from the Flyers in exchange for Kovalchuk.

SPECTOR'S TAKE: The Flyers are pressed for cap space and it could be difficult to make the dollars fit. There's been some suggestion Jeff Carter might be packaged to Atlanta for Kovalchuk but that would be a steep price to pay for a playoff rental player since they still couldn't afford to re-sign him beyond this season.

The asking price is always high for a player such as Kovalchuk. At least it is at the outset. Waddell's price will come down, and come down quickly when no offers come close to his asking price. He will have to drop it, for fear that the Bouwmeester situation of last year repeats itself. A franchise on the brink such as Atlanta surely can't afford to risk losing him for no return, can it?

The price being asked for Kovi is way way to high for a "rental". Unless he's guaranteed to sign, I don't think anyone will touch him outside of L.A.
