The Toronto Maple Leafs have called a press conference at the ACC today where it's expected they'll announce a major change, believed to be at least one trade or perhaps even two. Speculation is rampant J.S. Giguere might be coming to Toronto. Stay tuned, I'll update this post once the news is announced.
UPDATE The Leafs did acquire Giguere as expected but also landed an even bigger fish in a separate trade.
As most Leafs fans now know, the Leafs acquired Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom and a defense prospect from the Calgary Flames. Heading to Calgary is Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Ian White and Jamal Mayers.
Giguere was acquired from the Ducks in exchange for Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake.
SPECTOR'S TAKE: Regardless of what you make of these moves, it's clear Burke is avoiding the trade deadline rush and blowing up his roster now.
The acquisition of Phaneuf could mean the end of Tomas Kaberle with the Maple Leafs. Not by the trade deadline unless Kaberle demands a trade by then, but most likely this summer, for if as expected the Leafs miss the playoffs this year it'll open a two-month window whereby Kaberle can be dealt anywhere without his permission.
Considering how much Burke currently has invested in his blueline - Phaneuf's $6.75 million per season, Mike Komisarek's $4.5 million per season, Francois Beauchemin's $3.8 million and Kaberle's $4.25 million, that's nearly $20 million tied up in four defensemen for next season, and very little offensive depth up front.
Something's gotta give this summer, and I'm guessing it's Kaberle.
